The One School of Thought campaign has started the year with a boost from yet another celebrity supporter: Kevin Baird, bass player with North Down band, Two Door Cinema Club, added his name to the list of backers from the arts, business and sport.
Kevin, who has been touring the USA with the award-winning band, made time during a visit home to meet IEF staff and guest interviewer, Christopher Maher of Malone Integrated College. Christopher recorded a conversation with Kevin on his music, his life with the band and his support for the One School of Thought campaign. The day began with a live chat on the Pete Snodden Breakfast Show on Coolfm Radio, then the team moved to Belfast’s Waterfront Hall to film Christopher’s interview.

The One School Of Thought campaign welcomes the acknowledgement and the importance given to greater sharing in education in the Programme for Government announced by the First Minister and Deputy First Minister recently. The document is not a final, fixed strategic plan; but rather a consultation document and is open for public response until February 2012. Members of the campaign will take the opportunity to scrutinise the proposals and submit analysis and comment.

Hundreds of people signing up to a campaign for education reform have Parliamentary backing, with an Early Day Motion at Westminster receiving the sponsorship of MPs from a range of parties. As the One School of Thought campaign gathers pace, the Alliance MP for East Belfast, Naomi Long, has tabled an EDM calling on policymakers to support the push to make sharing in education a high priority.

The Education Minister, John O’Dowd made an announcement to the Assembly on Monday afternoon (26th September 2011) stating his determination to improve the quality of education even if it means having to close a number of schools.
An immediate audit is to be carried out to identify which Northern Ireland schools are no longer viable and need to be closed starting with post primary schools and looking specifically at pupil numbers, finances and educational quality.
